About Me

I am a Postdoctoral Research Fellow, working at the University of Michigan, in Computer Science and Engineering. My research focus is Natural Language Processing — in particular, I am working on Project Sapphire, a collaboration with IBM, developing a conversational academic adviser. I am also a member of two research groups: Computational Linguistics And Information Retrieval, and Language and Information Technologies.

I completed my PhD in the Berkeley NLP Group in 2016, advised by Dan Klein, with a thesis on new algorithms for syntactic parsing. I graduated from the University of Sydney with a Bachelor of Science (Advanced) with First Class Honours and Medal in Computer Science in 2009. For my honours thesis, "Adaptive Supertagging for Faster Parsing", I studied in the Schwa lab, advised by James Curran. I received my Higher School Certificate at Emanuel School, receiving the Premier's Award for my results in English, Mathematics, Physics, and Cosmology.

You can find my work on GitHub (jkkummerfeld) and occasional expressions of opinion on Twitter (jkkummerfeld).
